Measures distances through echoes and the speed of sound.

A sonar sends out sound, which gets reflected by the object you want to measure. As sound travels at a speed of approximately 340 m/s, the time until the reflection reaches the microphone of your phone can be used to calculate the distance of this object.

This experiment continuously plays a short "chirp", a sound sweeping from 2 kHz to 10 kHz, repeated about 23 times per second, and records at the same time. A crosscorrelation of the chirp and the recorded data gives information about the timing at which echoes occur. Several chirps are averaged for each result. The strongest signal is the sound traveling directly from the speaker to the microphone and all echoes are timed relative to it. This timing can then be multiplied with the speed of sound (and divided by 2 as the sound has to travel forth and back) and you get the distance at which the echo originated.

However, sound usually travels in every direction. For a sonar this means, that when targeting a wall, you also get reflections from the floor, the ceiling, another wall nearby, a post and simply from every suitable "hard" surface nearby. Therefore this sonar gives you all the reflections and it is up to you to interpret the result and to figure out, which reflection corresponds to the target you intended to measure. So start with a small hard target and try to screen all other directions with some foam material. Also, this needs a quiet environment.

Στο πείραμα παράγεται συνεχώς ένα σύντομο «κελάϊδισμα» (chirp), ένας ήχος που ~~στέλ~~κυμαίνεται ~~στο ηχείο και αρχίζει η εγγραφή~~από τα 2 kHz έως τα 10 kHz, ο οποίος επαναλαμβάνεται περίπου 23 φορές ανά δευτερόλεπτο, ενώ ταυτόχρονα πραγματοποιείται εγγραφή του ήχου. Το ισχυρότερο σήμα είναι ο ήχος που μεταδίδεται απευθείας από το ηχείο προς το μικρόφωνο και όλες οι ανακλάσεις χρονομετρούνται σε σχέση με αυτό.

Σημειώστε ότι η ήχος διαδίδεται σε κάθε κατεύθυνση. Αυτό σημαίνει ότι όταν σημαδεύετε ένα τοίχο, δέχεστε ανακλάσεις από το πάτωμα, το ταβάνι από κάθε άλλο κοντινό τοίχο, από ένα εμπόδιο και γενικά κάθε κατάλληλη "σκληρή" επφάνεια τριγύρω. Συνεπώς το σόναρ σας δείχνει όλες τις ανακλάσεις και εναπόκειται σε εσάς να ερμηνεύσετε το αποτέλεσμα και να βρείτε ποια ανάκλαση αντιστοιχεί στο στόχο που επιθυμούσατε να μετρήσετε. Οπότε ξεκινήστε με ένα μικρό σκληρό στόχο και προσπαθήστε να ελαττώσετε τις υπόλοιπες ανακλάσεις με κάποιο αφρώδες υλικό. Απαιτείται επίσης ήσυχο περιβάλλον.
