Determine the color using the hue saturation value (HSV) color model.

The pixels within the selected area are individually transformed to hue, saturation and value and then averaged. In case of hue, a cyclic average is used.

Note, that white balance will impact the result. While your phone's automatic white balance will do a sufficient job in most situations, you may want to set it to a fixed white reference to determine subtle differences.

Measure the luminance, i.e. the brightness observed through your camera's lens.

The resulting values use arbitraty units that are normalized to a fully white image with an ISO sensitivity of 100, aperture of f/1 and an exposure time of 1/60s. Phyphox will automatically scale the luminance calculated from the camera's image according to the current exposure settings. However, keep in mind that most phones take a moment to actually apply changing exposure settings, so if you use auto exposure or if you change the settings, it will take a moment for the readings to settle.

Also, the reading will be wrong and show saturation effects if any part of the image (or actually any color channel) is overexposed or (to a lesser extend) underexposed. Phyphox will highlight overexposed areas red and underexposed areas blue. You should avoid that read areas occur withint the measurement rectangle. Blue parts should be fine as long as they do not make up most of the measured area. The auto exposure mode in this configuration will try to avoid overexposure more aggressively than other parts of phyphox.

Further technical details: Phyphox uses the camera's preview stream and linearizes each pixel, assuming an sRGB color model with corresponding gamma curve. The resulting luminance is then averaged through a mix of shader-based averaging and texture filtering in the phone's GPU. However, non-linear behavior of cameras, especially if dynamic range compression is applied even in the preview, is beyond our control and might impact measurements on some phone models.

Zudem wird die Messung verfälscht und zeigt Sättigungseffekte sobald irgendein Teil des Bilds (oder sogar nur ein Farbkanal) überbelichtet oder (mit schwächeren Folgen) unterbelichtet ist. Phyphox wird überbelichtete Bereiche rot und unterbelichtete blau markieren. Du solltest unbedingt vermeiden, dass rote Bereiche in Mess-Rechteck ercheinen. Blaue Bereiche sind in Ordnung, solange sie nicht den Großteil der Messung ausmachen. Die automatische Belichtung in dieser Konfiguration wird deutlich aggressiver versuchen Überbelichtungen zu vermeiden als in anderen phyphox-Konfigurationen.

Weitere technische Details: Phyphox nutzt den Vorschau-Stream der Kamera und linearisiert jeden Pixel unter der Annahme, dass es sich um Daten im sRGB Farbmodell handelt mit der entsprechenden Gamma-Kurve. Die resultierende Leuchtdichte wird dann über eine Mischung aus Shader-basierter Mittelung und linearer Textur-Interpolation in der Grafikeinheit des Handys gemittelt. Allerdings liegen nicht-lineares Verhalten von Kameras, insbesondere wenn auch in der Vorschau Dynamikkompression angewendet wird, außerhalb unserer Kontrolle und können auf manschen Geräten die Messung negativ beeinflussen.
