Hold your phone roughly horizontal with the screen facing up. Tilt correction uses the accelerometer to compensate a tilted phone; without it, the phone has to lie flat. The compass shows magnetic north as measured by the magnetometer, so magnets, electronics and iron nearby will deflect it.
