The raw data from the camera is converted to RGB and the individual RGB channels are linearized assuming the gamma curve of sRGB, and then converted to luma. The relative luminance is the luma value normalized to the camera settings such that a pure white image yields a relative luminance of 1 if the camera is set to an exposure time of 1/60s an ISO of 100 and an aperture of f/1 (Note, that this still does not allow for comparison across different models.).

We recommend to keep the exposure such that the measured area is at medium brightness (i.e. gray). The auto exposure from phyphox will adapt the camrea settings to achieve this and this brightness level is mostly unaffected by the post-processing of your phone. The relative luminance is then almost entirely based on the camera settings (especially ISO and exposure time) that are required to achieve this brightness. However, the auto exposure takes a moment to settle, so you should wait a moment before taking relative luminance measure and observe if the preview image settles in a medium gray brightness.
